The New School · Middle School
Middle school at TNS is designed as a deliberate developmental arc. Students enter in sixth grade asking who they are, and leave in eighth grade ready to venture into the world with a clear sense of purpose, the skills to design for others, and the character to lead through collaboration and compassion.
The Three-Year Arc
Each year of middle school carries a signature question and a signature course built around it. The purpose statement students draft in sixth grade travels with them across all three years, growing in depth and specificity as they do.
The Building Blocks Framework
The Building Blocks framework organizes what students are developing across all three years of middle school. Every advisory conversation, every portfolio entry, and every Student Share Conference is rooted in these three domains.
The Innovator's DNA
Five discovery skills that prepare students for a world that demands creative thinking: Questioning, Observing, Experimenting, Networking, and Associative Thinking. Students choose a path within this domain and collect evidence of growth across the full year.
Future-focused skills and dispositions, providing more than a path to college and career.
Academic Excellence
The core academic competencies students develop across three years: Reading and Writing, Numeracy, Scientific Inquiry, Digital and Media Fluency, Global Citizenship and Cultural Competency, and STEAM. These are the domains where academic rigor and personal purpose intersect.
Transformative education beyond college admission.
P.R.I.D.E.
Whole-person growth organized around the five terms of the Cougar Challenge pledge recited every Monday in Assembly: Preparation, Respect, Integrity, Self-Discipline, and Effort. Not compliance, but genuine behavioral evidence of who a student is becoming.
Redefining whole-person education and academic excellence.
How We Learn
The TNS STEAM Team describes the conditions that make learning significant across the school. What follows is what those conditions look like specifically in the Middle School.

Conditions for Significant Learning
"Rooted in The New School's Mission and guided by our Vision, the STEAM Team facilitates the merging of disciplines through playful, hands-on, and minds-on experiences. By embracing experimentation, tinkering, and creative problem-solving, we spark curiosity, foster character, and strengthen community, from ECE to 12th Grade."
